Ethiopian Easter

Fasika

A Celebration of Resurrection

A Holy Day for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians

Easter, known as Fasika in Amharic, is the most important annual religious feast for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. It commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion, following a rigorous 55-day fast during which no animal products are consumed.

Fasika

A Night of Celebration

On Easter eve, people gather at churches, carrying candles that are lit during a colorful Easter mass service, which begins around midnight Ethiopian time. The atmosphere is filled with reverence and joy as the congregation celebrates the resurrection of Jesus.

A Feast of Rejoicing

After the mass, people return home to break their fast with a delicious feast featuring chicken, injera (a spongy flatbread), and traditional drinks like tella (local Ethiopian beer) or tej (honey wine).

A Time for Family and Community

Easter is also a time for family reunion and strengthening community bonds. The exchange of gifts, such as lamb, goat, or bread, symbolizes the spirit of giving and sharing.
