Dungur: Queen of Sheba Palace

Queen of Sheba’s (Dungur) Palace
The Dungur site, commonly known as the Palace of the Queen of Sheba, stands in Aksum, Ethiopia, and continues to intrigue both visitors and archaeologists. While many believe it to be the palace of the legendary queen, others argue that it may have belonged to a nobleman from the 6th century AD. Visitors to Dungur can climb the observation tower at the back for breathtaking views of the expansive layout, which features 50 rooms. The architecture showcases a fascinating design with its small, rough stones and walls that taper as they rise. The well-preserved flagstone floor suggests that one of the rooms was likely a throne room, while hidden treasure rooms add an element of mystery to the complex. There’s also a private bathing area and a kitchen, which notably contains a large brick oven. Additionally, the various stairwells hint at the possible existence of an upper storey, further expanding the historical narrative of this remarkable site.
