Abreha We Atsbeha
Nestled 15 kilometers west of Wukro, Abreha We Atsbeha is a remarkable rock-hewn church renowned for its grandeur and historical significance. Believed to date back to the 4th century, though some scholars place it in the 10th, it stands as one of Ethiopia’s earliest Christian structures.
Dedicated to the legendary Axumite brothers, Abreha and Atsbeha, who embraced Christianity in the 4th century, this church boasts exquisite interior decoration and stunning 17th-century murals. A unique feature is the prayer cross belonging to Abba Freminatos, Ethiopia’s first bishop, whose ecclesiastical name was Abba Selama (Father of Peace).
