Ancient Monasteries
Lake Tana’s 37 islands are home to ancient monasteries, some dating back over 700 years. These sacred sites house invaluable historical artifacts, including manuscripts and the remains of medieval Ethiopian emperors.
Explore the numerous islands scattered throughout Lake Tana, home to some of the world’s oldest and most revered monasteries, such as Tana Cherkos (alleged home of the Ark of the Covenant for centuries), Kebran Gabriel, Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Mariam. These monasteries, some dating back to the 12th century, boast stunning frescoes, ancient manuscripts, and a deep spiritual significance.
1
Ura Kidane Mihret
The Zege Peninsula, founder Saint Betre Mariam, a verdant expanse, is adorned with medieval churches, among which Ura Kidane Mihret stands out as a masterpiece. Founded by Saint Yohannes in the 14th century, the circular church, constructed in the 16th century, exemplifies Ethiopian Orthodox architecture with its mud-plastered walls and conical thatched roof.
Ura Kidane Mihret church is a round building with a thatched roof, typical of the region. A bamboo-matted path circles the church, creating a semi-private space. Inside, the church is dimly lit, with a large shrine in the center adorned with biblical illustrations and tapestries. A painted door leads to the inner sanctum where the holy Tabot is kept.

Azwa Maryam
The Azwa Mariam Monastery, a 14th-century religious site located on the Zeghie Peninsula, offers a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Despite its age, the monastery remains a peaceful retreat. A unique aspect of Azwa Mariam is its possession of a Bible containing 88 books, distinct from the commonly recognized canon. The interior walls of the church are adorned with intricate illustrations depicting stories from these 88 books, providing a visual narrative of religious history. Additionally, the monastery serves as a significant site for the ordination of deacons, who undergo examinations here before ascending to the priesthood.
Other Monasteries of Zege Peninsula
The serene Zege Peninsula, founded by Saint Betre Mariam, a verdant oasis nestled within Lake Tana, is home to a cluster of historic monasteries. Among these spiritual retreats are Mahil-zegie Giorgis, Betre Maryam, and Yiganda Tekle Hayimanot. Unlike many other Ethiopian Orthodox monasteries, these sites are open to both men and women, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s rich history and religious traditions.
To reach these sacred sites, travelers can embark on a boat journey from Bahir Dar or opt for a scenic road trip. Whether you choose to navigate the tranquil waters of Lake Tana or traverse the picturesque landscapes by land, on your way don’t forget to stop by Wonejeta St. Mikale Church, the journey to Zege Peninsula is an unforgettable experience.

Tana Qirkos
Tana Qirkos Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Ethiopia, is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Tana where one can observe life and rituals that have hardly changed since the Old Testament. This monastery had been used as one of the four places of ancient Judaic worship where sacrificial stones are still found. It is also thought that the Ark of the Covenant was housed here for eight centuries before being transferred to Aksum.
St. Yared, the renowned founder of Ethiopian church music, composed his seminal work, the Degua, at Tana Qirkos.
