Mentewab's Kuskuam
Explore A Hidden Gem in Gonder
Mentewab, a powerful Ethiopian Empress, built a magnificent palace complex at Kuskuam. This complex included a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and a three-story palace. After the deaths of her son and grandson, Mentewab retired from politics and was buried at the complex. The complex was damaged during foreign invasions but has since been partially restored. In the 1930s, the skeletons of Mentewab, her son, and her grandson were discovered during the reconstruction of the church. They are now displayed in a glass-topped coffin within the complex.
