Lake Abaya

Lake Abaya:
A Gem of the Ethiopian Rift Valley

A Natural Wonder

Lake Abaya, located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples region of Ethiopia, is a stunning natural wonder. Named after Queen Margherita of Italy by the Italian explorer Vittorio Bottego, this lake is a significant feature of the Great Rift Valley.

Geographical Significance

Fed by the Bilate River, Lake Abaya is situated east of the Guge Mountains, home to the Dorze tribe. The town of Arba Minch lies on its southwestern shore, while the southern shores are part of the Nechisar National Park.

Physical Characteristics

Lake Abaya is a large rift valley lake, measuring 60 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide. With a surface area of 1160 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 13 meters, it is one of the deepest lakes in the region. The lake’s distinctive red color is due to the high concentration of suspended sediments.

Interconnected Lakes

While Lake Abaya does not always have an outflow, it can occasionally overflow into Lake Chamo, demonstrating the interconnectedness of these Rift Valley lakes.
