Explore the Wonders of Lake Tana
Lake Tana,, Ethiopia’s largest lake, spans an impressive 3,660 square kilometers, is a captivating body of water with a rich history. Known to the ancient Greeks as Pseboe and to the Egyptians as Coloe, this “copper-tinted lake” has been revered for centuries. Its connection to the Blue Nile River has played a significant role in shaping Ethiopia’s ancient past.
Formed over 20 million years ago by a volcanic eruption, Lake Tana is a natural wonder. Its waters, averaging 14-15 meters deep, are home to diverse aquatic life, including 16 endemic fish species. The lake’s serene beauty is further enhanced by its numerous islands, many of which are inhabited by monks and host ancient monasteries.
The birdlife of Lake Tana is equally impressive, with iconic species like the white pelican gracing its waters. As you sail across the lake in traditional papyrus boats, you’ll be transported back in time, connecting with the ancient civilizations that once thrived in this region.

Once known as “Sebat Debir Ager,” or “Place of Seven Churches,” the island now boasts eight sacred sites, including Daga Estifanos, Narga Silassie, Kidist Arsema, Kota Maryam, Zibad Iyesus, Joga Yohannes, Gadena Giyorgis, and Mihla Kidane Mihret. The name “Dek,” derived from the Ge’ez word meaning “small,” is believed to refer to the island’s relatively low elevation compared to its neighbors.
