Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest mountain, stands tall at 4,550 meters (14,930 feet) above sea level. Located within the stunning Simien Mountains National Park in the North Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region, this majestic peak offers breathtaking views and a challenging climb for experienced mountaineers.
The mountain’s name, often mistakenly referred to as “Ras Dashen,” is a corruption of its Amharic name, “Ras Dejen,” which translates to “Head of the Front.” This moniker alludes to the traditional role of a military leader who fights at the forefront of the emperor’s army.
Ras Dashen is part of a massive ancient volcano, with its western counterpart, Mount Biuat, separated by the Meshaha River valley. The mountain’s climate is characterized by dramatic temperature fluctuations, with snow often blanketing the peak at night. However, the intense daytime heat typically melts the snow within a few hours, especially during the summer months.
