The Hamar tribe, known for their unique cultural practices, is particularly recognized for their traditional ceremonies involving women and bulls. Women voluntarily allow themselves to be lashed by male family members as a demonstration of their loyalty and devotion.

Hamar women are known for their short, thick ringlets, colored with butterfat and red ochre. They also adorn their goatskin gowns with shells and wear colorful bangles.

Men's Bull Jumping Ceremony

Men’s Bull Jumping Ceremony

A rite of passage for young men, the bull jumping ceremony involves leaping over a line of 10 to 30 bulls four times, completely naked. This feat proves their worth to the family of the woman they wish to marry. The ceremony can last up to three days, culminating in the man’s right to marry, own livestock, and have children.
