The Suri Tribe: A Matrilineal Society
The Suri are a pastoral tribe living on the west bank of the Omo River. They primarily rely on cattle for their livelihood, but have also adopted agriculture and cultivation of grains in recent times. Cattle are highly valued in Suri culture, as they are a symbol of wealth and status. The Suri tribe has an estimated population of 7,500 people, with individual villages ranging in size from 40 to 2,500 inhabitants.
Women’s Leadership
The Suri Tribe, known for its matrilineal traditions, places women in a central role within society. Women often manage households, farm, and contribute to the family’s income through selling grains and beer.
Age-Based Social Structure
Suri males are divided into four distinct age groups: children, young men, junior elders, and senior elders. Each group plays a unique role within the community, contributing to the overall functioning of Suri society.
