Bodi Tribe

The Bodi Tribe:
A Culture of Endurance

Nomadic Lifestyle

The Bodi are nomadic societies, constantly on the move to find new grazing lands for their livestock. Their reliance on cattle has shaped their culture and diet.

Unique Dietary Practices

The Bodi’s diet centers around livestock, with a particular fondness for blood-mixed milk. This practice involves making a small incision in the animal’s neck to obtain the blood without killing it.

Traditional Attire

Bodi men wear fabric skirts, while women traditionally wear goatskin clothing. Both men and women engage in scarification, a ritual that involves making intentional cuts on the skin to demonstrate beauty and fortitude.

The Ritual of Fattening (Kale)

Every year, selected Bodi men participate in a rigorous competition to gain as much weight as possible. They consume fatty foods and avoid physical activity for six months. On the day of the ritual, the men are covered in clay and ash before parading around a sacred tree. The fattest man is crowned the winner, receiving fame and hero status.

Cultural Significance of Fat

In Bodi culture, fat is highly valued. This ritual serves as a way for women to find suitable mates, as a man’s weight is seen as a sign of health and prosperity.
