Arbore Tribe
The Arbore People: A Riverine Oasis
A Strategic Location
The Arbore village, situated on the southern border of Ethiopia facing Kenya, is a unique oasis along the Weito River. The river’s seasonal flooding creates fertile lands, essential for the survival of the Arbore people.
A Pastoral Lifestyle
While agriculture plays a role in their lives, the Arbore primarily identify as pastoralists. Livestock, such as cows, goats, and sheep, are crucial to their economy and social standing.
A Diverse Population
The Arbore community, numbering around 5,500, is composed of two main branches: the Marle and the Gandaroba. Their diverse origins, stemming from various ethnic groups, have contributed to their rich cultural heritage.
Social Organization
The Arbore society is structured around an age class system, where power is passed down through generations. Political leaders are responsible for maintaining justice, fostering good relationships with neighboring peoples, and regulating land and animal ownership.
Agricultural Practices and Social Norms
Fields are distributed seasonally among families, who are expected to follow traditional rules for land use. Neglecting these rules can lead to severe punishments, including exclusion from land distribution and physical punishment.
